Santomanno holiday farm is situated on a hill (380m above sea level) overlooking a branch of the Tiberino lake, which stretches from the north to the south of Umbria.
Indeed it is easy to find fossils of Bovidae, hippos, European elephants and Rhinos, dating from the Plio-Pleistocene period, located on the southwest side of the hill, which slopes into a basin of fluvial-lacustrine origin.
The hill is surrounded by the Martani mountains which are the internal chain of the Appennines dividing the region of Umbria from Marche.
The valley is filled by sediments of lacustrine origin - known as VILAFRANCA - deposited in the period between the middle Pliocene (Tertiary era) and the Pleistocene (Quaternary era) (5 / 4 million years ago).
As confirmation of this, a fossil forest in Dunarobba was recently discovered - paleontologically unique in the world for its consistency: there are fossil redwoods of a luxuriant forest which are similar to the current ones.
